IX 024 lockups
« on: May 06, 2011, 11:34:58 PM »
If I drive all my DIN/AINs to system voltage and ramp up my voltage slow, the IX 024-10 input module I'm using locks up until it gets a good power cycle. Am I required to source all inputs to this module from the 5V output line?

Hello.

If you have power connected to a number of inputs before you power on the module, it will not start up.

If possible, power the inputs at the same time as you power your module.

Best regards

All the inputs and system power are connected to the same 12V power when this lockup occurs.
I have verified this on my desktop repeatedly, the only delay there could be would be due to differences in the capacitance of the sourcing path, which will exist but won't be much.
According to another engineer out here, this problem has been observed before and the IX 024 inputs must be sourced by it's own 5V out to work reliably, which is probably mostly because this ensures the pin inputs will lag the power is supplied to the module. Can you confirm this?

Just a thought....
If I understand correct, upon powering up all inputs are active?  Is there ever an instance that all inputs would be inactive upon powering up? If not then I would try making them active low, however my guess is you would get the same result. The other option is to use one output to activate an external relay with a compare tied to ETime in Inputs OS. Set the compare to 500 to 2000mS  when ETime equals what you set the compare to you can use the true to activate a Latch which can drive your output, this would guarantee the lag between power up and power to your inputs.

It's just a bank of switches so they could be in any state.

>The other option is to use one output to activate an external relay...
That would probably work, but in our case it appears to be solved by just wiring the switched power connection to the 5V out instead of system 12.

Not an unsolvable problem, but it's ok a long time to diagnose and rewire, and were still not sure were ok.
I guess I just want to point it out and get it either fixed in a hardware rev of the IX 024 or better documentation on wiring limitations.

After some more testing it looks like even if I drive all the inputs with the 5V out it's not reliable and will still lock up after engine start pretty regularly. For now I'll add an extra relay and drive it from the master when I see engine speed.
Pretty annoying though, I'm probably just going to design this thing out.

Sorry, but why does Sauer Danfoss not solve this problem for future IX024?
It is no problem to start a controller, if the inputs are high.
There must be a design error.
I think the inputs power up the intern controller by diodes inside the controller.
So they have to do changes in hardware!

I hope, they will do so and it would be nice to get information about this changes.

A year later, I am having the same problem.  I can not rewire the system now as it is in a mine down 3000 ft.

Each time the machine starts, two other modules, and the controller stay powered up.

I wish there was a similar module that could quickly replace it. :(

The only workaround is to power the IX024 prior to the inputs.
Use a relay to switch the power for the inputs after switching on the IX024.
You can use the 5V output voltage to switch this relay.
It is a shame that Sauer-Danfoss don't bring a update of this controller or
don't tell us when an update will realized.
