Reading frequency

I am trying to test reading frequency input on plus+1 controllers. The only signal generator I have access to generates a square wave between about +-2V. I tried changing the digital pin config so that the high/low values are 500 and 1000, which works for reading those sorts of voltages as DigIn, but frequency remains zero. The generated signal is about 1.95khz.

Is the problem with the negative voltages?
