MC050 bidiractional outputs

Hi. I was wondering could I make a stepper motor controller on a MC050? I have a unipolar stepper motor (6 wires) which runs on 3V 3A. The outputs may generate 3 amps and I know that digital multifunctional outputs in 'digital' configuration may run as source or sink. But since I'm powering the MC050 from 24V I can't really use this option. I could use a PWM to lower the voltage to required 3V but can I still use the output as a sink? Or maybe the idea is stupid from the beginning?
