Inexpensive gateway?
« on: August 10, 2016, 05:54:51 PM »
Hello,
I need to alter the parameters on a Danfoss fan controller (FCU).  These recently moved from an old serial IR interface to CAN and am told to use the Plus+1 Service Tool to accomplish this.  However, I can't justify the cost of a CG150 gateway for this single task.  Any chance other common, inexpensive USB-CAN interfaces would be compatible with the service tool?  Any specific recommendations?

Thanks,
Jeff

I have had mixed success with using a Caterpillar Communication Adaptor 3, so if you have access to one of those it might be worth a shot.

It wasn't that reliable (or fast) though.

Cheers,

John.

Hi Jeff!

The service tool supports the generic communication standards RP1210B & RP1210A for any compliant third party gateway.

I copied some text for you from the Service Tool User Manual (page 9-10) which you easily can find under Help in the Service tool.

"Using the third party Gateway devices via the RP1210 standard
The service tool supports the generic communication standards RP1210B & RP1210A for any compliant
third party gateway. These recommended practice standards were written by the Technology and
Maintenance Council (TMC).
• RP1210B gateways may not support all baudrates that the built-in gateways support.
? RP1210B gateways can be used if they support the generic CAN protocol.
• RP1210A gateways only supports baudrates equal to 250k.
RP1210A gateways can be used if they:
? Support the generic CAN protocol
     ? Support blocking calls
? Use the same endianness (byte order) for CAN messages as RP1210B
• Activate RP1210 gateways by selecting the appropriate DeviceID in the submenu under the gateway
submenu. All possible device IDs will be listed for selection. Devices do not need to be connected to
the computer to be listed."

Best regards

Thank you all for your help!  I'm seeing Kvaser interfaces on Ebay, I'll snag one of those if I can't find a much cheaper interface with clear RP1210 support.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Hello!

I have removed pricing posts from this thread.

This is s technical forum and we are trying to keep this forum focus on the technical part of the PLUS+1 platform.
For pricing I kindly ask you to turn to Danfoss sales representative or one of our distributors.

Thanks for your understanding // Thomas

Hello Thomas, you are correct and I did not intend post to be a sales opportunity.  I had seen the earlier post about the Kvaser and was just trying to state Danfoss was not too expensive.  I respect the forum however and its one of very few forums that do not get lost in pricing / marketing garbage.
